Van Wely had annotated it for ‘New In Chess’, and had come to the conclusion that 12….Nd7 was a mistake! He forgot this over the board.

De lijst van schakers die hun voorbereiding vergaten is oneindig….en zal nog dagelijks groeien. Mede daarom is Fischer Random/Chess 960 bij sommigen (Carlsen!) zo in trek. Je krijgt een andere beginstelling voorgeschoteld en kunt je dus niet op een opening voorbereiden. Er zijn negentig mogelijke startposities.
De eerste uitvinder van Fischer Random Chess was echter niet Bobby Fischer maar Philip Julius Graaf van Zuylen van Nijevelt (1743-1826), een generaal, senator en de auteur van waarschijnlijk het eerste Nederlandse schaakboek.
Tim Krabbé vertelt in zijn chess diary (scroll naar nummer 123):
Possibly the first time the shuffling idea was mentioned, was in 1792, in the first original Dutch chess book by Philip Julius, Count Van Zuylen van Nijevelt, a Dutch army general, senator of the French Empire, and one-time Napoleonic governor of Amsterdam. He did not like the openings with their boring repetition of patterns, which enabled weaker players to memorize moves with which they could beat stronger ones. He suggested determining the places of the pieces by lot, “because the positions can then be changed infinitely, and it will certainly not be possible anymore to study them beforehand.”
His idea does not seem to have caught on, but it was often reinvented. The oldest surviving shuffle games are from 1842.
Open NK
De Amsterdamse schaakclub Fischer Z http://www.fischerz.nl/ organiseert op zaterdag 1 juni 2024 alweer voor de negentiende keer het Open Nederlands Kampioenschap Fischer Random Chess. Inmiddels geheten: het Martin Walop toernooi.
In 2004 werd Yasser Seirawan kampioen, Erik van den Doel en Dennis de Vreugt wonnen een paar maal; recordhouder is Dimitri Reinderman (4x). Zie de wiki-overzichtspagina.
Erik van den Doel zei in 2019 toen hij dit NK won:
‘Sosonko zei ooit dat elke partij als een nieuwe liefde moet voelen. Nu is het moeilijk vlinders in je buik te voelen als je voor de honderdste keer Spaans of de Najdorf op het bord hebt. Bij Fischer Random Chess voel ik nog wel vlinders in mijn buik.’
Levon Aronian zei:
‘Chess960 is healthy and good for your chess. If you get into it and not just move the pieces to achieve known positions it really improves your chess vision.‘
Alexandra Kosteniuk: ‘I have to say that I love Chess960!‘
Fischer zelf:
‘I invented Fischerandom chess to keep chess going. Because I consider the old chess is dying, or really it’s dead.‘
En een prachtige algemene opmerking die je als promotie van deze bijzondere vorm van schaken kunt opvatten:
My friend devoted a great deal of time and energy to the study of openings. Whenever I passed through his city he always came to the station for me and put me up at his house. We would have frequent conversations during which he would ask me about this or that variation; to his great surprise I would almost always answer, ‘I don’t know it.’ Then he would say: ‘What will you do when somebody plays it against you?’ And I would reply, ‘Ninety percent of the book variations have no great value, because they either contain mistakes or they are based on fallacious assumptions; just forget about the openings and spend all that time on the endings. In the long run you will get much better results that way.

Regels en aanmelding
Er worden 7 ronden Zwitsers gespeeld, 15 minuten per persoon per partij plus elke zet 5 seconden increment. Inschrijfgeld: 10 euro, cash te betalen aan de zaal. Het prijzengeld is afhankelijk van het aantal deelnemers, maar minimaal 1000 euro, waarvan 40% 1e prijs, 25% 2e prijs en 15% 3e prijs. Er is ook een damesprijs en een ratingprijs tot 2000. Het maximum aantal deelnemers is 60, de volgorde van inschrijving is bepalend.
Minimum ELO- rating van 1700; dit minimum geldt niet voor eerdere deelnemers.
